A research study in the journal “Nature” confirms that breast cancer is 11 separate diseases, each with a different possible progression. Scientist at the Universities of Cambridge led by Professor Carlos Caldas in collaboration with Professor Christina Curtis at Stanford analysed the genetic mutations inside the breast tumours of nearly 2000 women to create a statistical tool that could predict outcomes. The next stage is to develop a routine test for general use so that treatments and follow-ups can be tailored much more closely to the individual.
